Authorizations for professional pyrotechnicians

If you wish to carry out activity as a certified pyrotechnician, you must have a number of authorizations in place before you can start. You must have different types of authorization depending on your circumstances.

Temporary and occasional pursuit of professional activity as a certified pyrotechnician in Denmark

The applicant must notify the Danish Safety Technology Authority in writing before pursuing the profession of certified pyrotechnician. The notification must contain:

  1. Information on any insurance agreements or other forms of collective protection associated with the practitioner’s professional liability.
  2. Evidence that the applicant is a citizen of an EU or EEA country or a country with which the EU has entered into an agreement giving access to pursue regulated professions.
  3. Attestation or other evidence that the applicant is established in a EU or EEA country or a country with which the EU has entered into an agreement giving access to pursue regulated professions.
  4. Evidence of professional qualifications.
  5. Evidence that the applicant has not been found guilty of a criminal offence which constitutes a danger of them misusing their profession.

How to apply: Occasional pursuit

If you wish to carry out activity as a certified pyrotechnician in Denmark on a temporary basis, you should simply notify the Danish Safety Technology Authority of this. You must use the form for notification of temporary and occasional pursuit of professional activity as a certified pyrotechnician on the basis of foreign professional qualifications. The guidelines Recognition of certified pyrotechnicians on the basis of foreign professional qualifications tell you which documents you must upload with your notification to the Danish Safety Technology Authority.

Establishing a business

If you wish to work permanently as a certified pyrotechnician in Denmark you must apply for authorization from the Danish Safety Technology Authority. You must use the same form. The guidelines Recognition of certified pyrotechnicians on the basis of foreign professional qualifications tell you which documents you must enclose with your application to the Danish Safety Technology Authority. 
 

The application must contain:

  1. Proof of the applicant’s nationality.
  2. Copies of attestations of professional competence or of the evidence of formal qualifications giving access to pursue the profession of certified pyrotechnician or equivalent professions.
  3. Documentation of the applicant’s professional experience as a certified pyrotechnician.
  4. Documentation proving that the applicant is not prohibited from pursuing their profession in the applicant’s country of origin at the time of application.
  5. Evidence that the applicant has not been found guilty of a criminal offence which constitutes a danger of them misusing their profession.
  6. Documentation proving the applicant is of legal age.

Please note that approval/recognition of qualifications does not entail the right to use professional fireworks. For this right you must be authorized separately for each individual event. You must apply for this authorization from the municipal council for the municipality in which the fireworks are to be used.

Additional requirements

  • Use: In addition to being approved as a certified pyro technician, the municipality in which you wish to hold the individual fireworks event must approve the event before you can start work. You must apply no later than 30 days before the event and use
  • Provision of fireworks: If you import the fireworks yourself into Denmark or manufacture your own fireworks in Denmark, you must have approval to do so from the Danish Safety Technology Authority. You must use the form Application for activity approval
  • Storage of your fireworks: In order for you to receive permission to store your fireworks, you must apply for authorization from the municipality in which you wish to store your fireworks. You must use the form Application for authorization for storage

When will I get an answer?

The decision on whether or not to issue an authorization will be made as soon as possible after the complete application is received.

Temporary and occasional pursuit of profession:

If you have not heard from the Danish Safety Technology Authority within one month of us receiving your notification, you may pursue your profession in Denmark on a temporary or occasional basis for up to one year following this notification. After one year a new notification is required.

Establishing a business:

The Danish Safety Technology Authority has to give you a reasoned response to your application within three months of us receiving your application. This deadline may be extended by one month if difficulties arise that may lead to a delay.

The authorization will not be regarded as having been granted if the Danish Safety Technology Authority has not replied within the set time.

If your application is rejected

If the Danish Safety Technology Authority decides to reject your application for authorization as a certified pyro technician, the authority will send you a reasoned notification.

Decisions taken by the Danish Safety Technology Authority on authorization cannot be referred to another administrative authority. A rejected personal authorization may, however, be brought before the Danish Company Appeals Board in certain cases. This is possible if authorization was rejected on the basis of the applicant having demonstrated, while in another position or profession, behavior providing grounds for the assumption that the authorized economic activity will not be operated responsibly.

The deadline for submitting an appeal is four weeks from the date on which the decision was announced. The appeal should be submitted in writing to the Danish Company Appeals Board.
